  • A Mighty Girl's top tips for parents on keeping kids engaged at home while observing social distancing.

With schools closing, events cancelled, and many companies urging employees to work from home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, parents are facing an unexpected challenge. Since many of these closures overlap school March breaks, kids may not have homework to do — and even if they do, the lack of school and extracurricular activities will leave them with extra time on their hands. But that doesn't mean that parents can rely on their usual school holiday activities like playdates, playgrounds, and museum visits: as Dr. Asaf Bitton writes in Social Distancing: This Is Not A Snow Day, "even if you choose only one friend to have over, you are creating new links and possibilities for the type of transmission that all of our school/work/public event closures are trying to prevent.... We need to all do our part during these times, even if it means some discomfort for a while." Continue reading Continue reading

  • Today marks the second year of a new holiday tradition, Giving Tuesday -- a day focused on encouraging charitable giving following the shopping-intensive days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. To celebrate this day of giving, at A Mighty Girl, we're highlighting seven incredible grassroots projects founded by girls and women that we hope you'll consider supporting on this day and throughout the year.

We've also highlighted an effort by a young Mighty Girl to give back to her community to show how every child can have an impact. And, while all of these groups need financial support to continue their important work, we also want to showcase another important type of giving -- volunteerism. All during the holiday season, we've been sharing stories of Mighty Girls' "Mighty Good Deeds" and encourage you to share your own Mighty Girl's good deeds on our Facebook wall. • Doctor Who was a popular theme for Mighty Girls this Halloween so in celebration of the long-running British science fiction television show's 50th anniversary today, we present our A Mighty Girl tribute to the immortal time traveler!

If you're new to the program, one of its unusual features is that the lead character, the Doctor, periodically "regenerates" into a new body and a new actor takes on the role. The new season marks the character's 11th regeneration and, before actor Peter Capaldi was announced as the newest incarnation of the Doctor, there was much speculation that a woman could take on one of the most famous roles in television.

Actor John Barrowman, who played Captain Jack Harkness on the show, endorsed the idea, stating “We’ve had great guys playing the role. The character of River Song was so popular in the last part of the series and it [had] such an impact -- why shouldn’t we have a female doctor?” Helen Mirren, who was widely floated as an excellent choice for the role, added, “I think it’s absolutely time for a female Doctor Who. I’m so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least 10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role.” Continue reading Continue reading

  • Joanna Cole's bestselling series starring the beloved Ms. Frizzle, which sold more than 93 million copies, made science fun for generations of kids.

Joanna Cole, the author of the beloved The Magic School Bus book series which made science fun for generations of kids, died this week of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 75. Through her books, Cole aimed to make science fun for kids as they followed the adventures of a group of schoolchildren taking field trips on their 'magic school bus' everywhere from outer space to the inside the human body — all led by their exuberant, red-haired teacher Ms. Frizzle. In the decades since the first book was published, The Magic School Bus has grown to include a variety of books, an animated TV show, a series of science kits; and, this year, plans for a live-action movie adaptation. "Joanna Cole had the perfect touch for blending science and story," Scholastic chairman and CEO Dick Robinson said when announcing her death on July 15. "Joanna's books, packed with equal parts humor and information, made science both easy to understand and fun for the hundreds of millions of children around the world." For decades, many girls have loved the exciting stories of the Star Wars universe. But whether they were fans of the original rebel princess, Princess Leia, or eagerly followed the adventures of other Star Wars characters, like Padme Amidala, Ahsoka Tano, or Sabine Wren, it's often been challenging to find merchandise that celebrated the characters that they loved.

With the arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens — and the revelation that the film's star, Rey, was female — excitement began to build. But despite Rey's prominence in the film, fans were dismayed to discover that products featuring her were few and far between. This led to a hashtag campaign, #WheresRey, dedicated to seeking better representation of female characters — in particular Rey — in Star Wars merchandise. Fortunately, companies began to respond to the demand and provide more options for Rey fans.

In advance of the highly anticipated sequel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in this blog post, we're showcasing a variety of books, toys, clothing, and decor featuring Rey, as she is shown in both films. Whether you're seeking a storybook for a young fan, an action figure depicting Rey during her Jedi training, or artwork featuring Rey, there are many more options for all ages.
