A Mighty Girl's 2017 Halloween Highlights

Isabelle, age 4, became interested in Dr. Jane Goodall after finding an article about her in National Geographic. In her imagination our yard has become a forest in Tanzania and she's been busy studying chimpanzees.

Madison, age 4, decided that she wanted to dress up as the whole solar system for Halloween! She loves learning about outer space and even says she wants to be an astronaut when she grows up!

Two best friends who love science dress up as Ada Twist Scientist (Meron, 7yo) and Rosie Revere Engineer (Irene, 7yo). "Rosie's" mom is a bioengineer. "Ada's" mom is a scientist.

This is the first year Dani got to pick her own costume and she was so excited about her choice. She loves all things space and even build her own Rocketship to go with it.

Havana age 6, inspired by Grace for President to show that women belong in the White House. She is standing in front of the White House and wants you to join her in smashing the patriarchy!

Emerson, 3 - Has never seen the movie but infatuated with the idea of ghosts. I told her about Ghostbusters, let her play with the proton pack and she was in! We made the costumes ourselves :)

Aaliyah age 3 as Rosie the Riveter is a mighty girl every day of her life. She can do it is a perfect motto for my amazing girl.

Grace, who is 6.5, read Victoria Jamieson's graphic novel Roller Girl about eight times within the first two weeks she owned it this summer. There was never a question about what her costume was going to be, and with Nana's knitting help (those socks!), she nailed it.

When Amelia and Eleanor were in first grade the did a project and learned that Amelia Earhart flew Eleanor Roosevelt in a plane and the idea for their second grade Halloween costume was born! (The story of this historic flight is told in the picture book Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride.)

Lily decided to dress up as The Princess in Black, the main character of her favorite book series of the same name! She fell in love with how Princess Magnolia is more than just a typical princess and that she fights monsters as the Princess of Black on the side!

My daughter, age 9, wanted to be someone fierce and exciting. She decided on a pirate, but rejected all the “pirate cutie” dresses in the girls section of the costume shop. She loved the vest and coat in this costume, and wondered why it was in the “boys” section.

Ella has spent the last year making her voice heard. After a boy told her girls shouldn't vote, she became even more vocal. For Halloween, she wanted to celebrate woman's suffrage!

My 2nd grade Mighty Girl is obsessed with ALL THINGS science! When she was given a rock to paint at Girl Scouts she made it into a "generalized human cell". She adores Ms. Frizzle and was so happy to dress as one of her sheros!

Mariana is 7 weeks old and wanted to celebrate her Mexican heritage by dressing as Frida Kahlo for her first Halloween

Kayla (12) decided to be a lesser-known superheroine this year- Marvel’s Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. This character definitely combines her love of comics and animals!

Lydia, age 8, read Pippi Longstocking and fell in love with her! She decided to be Pippi ten months before Halloween and never once changed her mind. Lydi-Pippi was such a fun Halloween adventure!

Cora, 7. Chose Te Fiti, the Goddess of Life from Moana after seeing the movie last year.

Coralee, age 4, saw this dress and was curious about Audrey Hepburn when I said it reminded me of her. When I said Audrey helped kids through UNICEF she said that’s who she wanted to be for Halloween.

Our Bee as Devasena from an Indian movie Bahubali. She loved that women also fought to protect their people and LOVES the bow and arrow.

Ms. Marvel! Inspired by Kamala’s desire to be true to herself and embrace her own path, my daughter was excited to make this costume even though this character isn’t widely recognized. She even took some teasing at school due to her choice but she stayed true to her own heart.

Luci, 6, loved the movie Edward Scissorhands. She was moved by the idea of the town thinking he was a "bad guy" because if the way he looked. "But really he was nicer than all.of them"

Alice, 6, lives animals more than anything. This year she chose to be a peacock.

This is Lily, she's almost 3. She wanted to be Kiki because she loves how she flies on her broom and knows how to do magic.

Esme is 10 years old and chose to dress as GoGo Tomago from Big Hero 6 for Halloween. When asked what she liked so much about the GoGo character, she said, "Well,...she is TOUGH! Like me!"

7 year old Mireille, who is a bookwarm is fascinated by Ms. Murasaki Shikibu, who wrote world’s first novel, The Tale of Genji over 1,000 years ago.

Marianna, age 10. My daughter is a fan of science fiction and fantasy. Over the summer, we watched the entire Doctor Who series as our family entertainment. She loved the weeping angels. For Halloween, she helped me sew the dress and craft the wings (foam board base with craft foam feathers hot glued on top and elastic straps for wearing).

Mary, age 4, as Queen Boudica. She wanted to be a "real warrior queen" so we did a little research and found Boudica!

Olivia age 10. We could have settled for a store bought costume but she was on board for letting me make this one. She loves being fierce so Wonder Woman was the perfect choice!

My 4 year old has been obsessed with Wonder Woman's story since she saw the first trailer. After seeing the movie this summer, she decided that she needed to be General Antiope for Halloween. We even made a costume for her battle pony, Dusty.

Rey from Star Wars! A, age 7 - Ever the warrior, NEVER the damsel!

Peyton, 7 years. A passionate advocate for animals, our girl has the same big heart and tenacity that Fern did in Charlotte’s Web. She loved the story about as much as she loves animals!

Chiara just turned 9 but she’s loved science ever since I can remember. She rocks straight As and has an incredible thirst for knowledge. Earlier in the year, she learned about Marie Curie and was so excited to tell me that she had been the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize not once, but twice! She aspires to work for NASA one day and I have no doubt she will accomplish her goal one day.

A fierce lover of the Monterey Bay— Zoe couldn’t wait to be a scuba Diver with her dad as a naturalist protecting the sea otters.

A velociraptor (made and worn by 11 yo Addie) and her handlers (mighty girls Fiona and Emmy), were inspired by Jurassic Park. The girls had so much fun!

Ella's favourite superhero is Bumblebee so she wanted to dress as Hawkgirl, Bumblebee's friend in DC Superhero Girls, so they could fly around together

Our 5 year old Boston conceived the idea of a Mother Nature costume all on her own. I just had to help execute her vision. I think it encompasses her personality perfectly-she is soft, tender, can create a bit of a storm and is powerful.

Jillian, age 11, loves that firecracker Anne! Whether she's showing her smarts, indulging her imagination, or being a bosom friend, Anne sure does beat all!

Earlier this year we listened to the Maleficent audio book (engagingly read by Lucy Rayner) with our 6 year-old daughter Maile. Maile has a strong sense of fairness and justice, and by the time the book concluded, Maleficent was a hero to her. Maile knew right then that she wanted to be Maleficent for Halloween -- but the "good, real Maleficent", protector of the Moors and mother figure to Princess Aurora. Over the next couple of months we carefully pieced together Maile's costume to her exact vision; it came together beautifully and she was proud to wear it (and explain it)!

Nuala, age 5, chose Lucy because of her fierce determination and huge talent. Laughter is powerful! This is our year #3 of “Redheads Who Rocked History” costumes.

9-year-old Madigan decided to dress up as NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson after watching the film "Hidden Figures". at the end of the film she turned to her family and exclaimed "I want to learn to do math like Katherine Johnson!"

Lilah, 7, dressed up as Maria Tallchief from “She Persisted” for “Dress Up as Your Favorite Book Character” day at school. Lilah, like Maria, is a member of the Osage Nation, and they are distant relatives. Lilah loves Maria’s story because it shows us that no matter how distant or elusive our dreams seem, with hard work and determination they can be achieved.

My 10-year-old loves animals, Japanese anime, and is passionate about environmental issues, so Nausicaä was the perfect choice for this year's costume.

Veronica loves to devour book after book, so it only makes sense that she would ask to dress as a bookworm for Halloween.

Ruby created this costume all by herself. She worked in it for over a month.

Chloe 10 recently saw Alice in Wonderland performed by the Australian Ballet, she loved The Mad Hatter and decided to be him

Kimora wanted to wear something fierce and pink. The best of both worlds!

Rose is 7 and she wanted to be Grace O'Malley after she read about her in a book. She is channeling her in this picture.

My daughter Addalie, age 6 was diagnosed a month ago with Type 1 Diabetes. She has been so strong and brave. We found out Ginger Rogers had Type 1 diabetes as well and she had originally chose her to dress up as but decided in her favorite dancer Shirley Temple because it's a little more familiar. She wants to be a famous tap dancer and won't let anything hold her back.

Arabella - age 7. Baby Ruth is in the HOUSE! My strong-woman-in-training went as her favorite superhero - Notorious RBG. (On the back of her judges gown in gold sparkle is Notorious RBG and in matching letters, her shirt underneath reads "I Dissent!") She believes Halloween should be scary, so she picked a strong Jewish woman (like she will grow up to be) who was and is scary to the establishment. She believes in making a better world for all women. Remember - there's no truth without Ruth!

Sarah, age 10, chose to be a Wood-elf from Mirkwood--inspired by Tauriel from The Hobbit. She loves Tauriel because of her bravery, strength, athleticism, empathy, and goodness of character. Sarah practices archery in real life.

Caris, 8, aspires to be the President. I signed up to have her back as Secret Service :)

Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas! Ebony - age 8. She has an adventurous spirit and creative imagination. She decided to be Sally this year because she thought she was unique.

Myah, 8 "I don't like when my 'friends' try to say there are boy things and there are girl things - everyone can like what they want"

Gilli, age 4....We love Fiona the warrior!!

Keira (7) loves reading and thought Hermione was so cool and smart.

My daughter loves the show “Star Wars Rebels,” she adores the character Sabine Wren. I made her Halloween costume out of various fabrics, craft foam, paint and lots of glue!

Audrey - age 5. Audrey is fascinated by all things police related. She even wants to be a police officer when she grows up. So it was only natural for her to pick this as her costume this year.

Lillian, age 3, enjoys watching the ultimate female superhero: She-Ra! The fact that She-Ra's alter ego is just as competent without her powers makes her even more awesome than her brother He-Man!

And though she be but little, she is FIERCE.

Sasha H., Age 4, wanted a costume as fierce as she is.

Felicity, age 5. She chose Beyoncé because she’s “so cool” and because “she looks like me.”

Lilly loves rock climbing, so being a rock climber for Halloween was a natural choice. Accessorized with a faux rock wall attached to her bag, and she was good to go!

Larkin (12) dressed as Sir Alanna the Lioness (from Tamora Pierce’s Tortall books), complete with her signature gold-washed chain mail, coat of arms, amethyst drop earrings, and trusty sword Lightning.

Maeve, 13, has always had independent ideas. This year when all of her friends dressed as superheroes, she stuck to her guns and dressed as medusa, who has fascinated her since she learned about Greek mythology in Literature class last year.

Sophia, age 9, choose to be a Dalek, as she loves Dr. Who. We are excited to see the new female Doctor!

My daughter Helena, 4 years old, always said she wants to be a pilot whenever we travel. She was inspired to be a pilot for Halloween when we had a woman pilot in our last trip. She was so happy when she saw a woman pilot, in uniform saying goodbye from the cockpit!

Our Elsa is 9 (named after her grandmother) and has grown a little tired of the constant comparison with the "other" Elsa. She chose this costum and felt very proud she tricked everyone - just because they assumed the kid inside was a boy. She told me, anyone can be strong!

Katie Smith, age 13. Wanted to think outside the box, but wound up in the box flying high.

We'd told Sophie (8 yo) no one would get who she's dressing up as but she didn't care-- she was more excited about the costume than the prospect of people knowing who she is. Besides, she argued that Coco Chanel didn't care that she was designing clothes no one wanted to wear at first and that she did it anyway and so that's just how it was going to be ????

Harley Quinn! 6-year-old Alicia has always loved superheroes, and when she saw this costume on the rack three months before Halloween, she knew immediately it was the one she wanted!

Sofia is 11, and has a goal of someday being an actor on Broadway. She chose to be Eliza from Hamilton because it’s her favorite musical and the character of Eliza is a strong woman who perseveres through challenges and heartbreak, and ultimately uses her life to tell the stories of our national founders, as well as help hundreds of children. (Historical and theater)

Lundyn (age 6) has an inquisitive mind that loves science and space exploration. She intends to visit Mars one day and refuses to let cerebral palsy get in her way.

Eleanor (4) wanted to be a library because "Books and sharing are my favorites things and that's what a library is!" Her sister Harmony (11 months) played the role of Head Librarian.

My all things science obsessed wanted to be a stellar black hike for Halloween. Together she and I built this costume from scratch and made her out of this world dream come true!

Moriah Faith, 7yrs old... Medival Huntress, fighting all evil. Equipped with the cross around her neck and bow on her back

Mayson: 7 years old. When looking for a costume, my daughter was disappointed to see that doctor was labeled as a “boy” costume at the store. She wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up, so she decided right then that she was going to be a doctor for Halloween, because “there are tons of girl doctors out there, and (the store) shouldn’t say that only boys can be doctors!”

Rosie is three and loves learning about the world around her. Space, dinosaurs, the human body (she was FASCINATED with learning about how mama was growing her new baby brother), and now her latest love, geography. When she refused her initial costume choice on the morning of Halloween, I was inspired by the hat we already had and put together a last minute Carmen Sandiego! She loved pointing out her favourite places.

In the middle of a January night, when she was sick with croup, my then 3-year-old asked if she could be a book for Halloween! She stuck with the idea for 9 months and ultimately chose to be a Jenny Linsky Halloween book, Jenny's Moonlight Adventure, as she loves the whole series. Her grandma made the costume and my now 4 year old LOVED it.

Matilda, 10, chose San, (Princess Mononoke) a young warrior girl who was raised by a wolf goddess, and is fighting to save the forests.

Charlie, age 9 - she's mad about science and thrives in her STEM Magnet school. #mightygirl

My daughter is not your typical girl. She's been Batman, Robin, and Captain America for Halloween. this year she chose Link, from Legend of Zelda. I love how she's not afraid to be who she wants! And I especially love how everyone has been supportive of her costumes and encourages her!

My girls love strong girl characters that can hold their own just like Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy. They decided the both wanted to dress up like her for Halloween!! Nothing can stop these tough girls!!

My daughter wants to visit Idaho some day and decided to be a sack of Idaho potatoes for Halloween. The entire costume was made from scratch, including the “potatoes”.

Katharyn, age 9, has a love of all things creepy. She worked on this dress with her mother and grandmother. We made it ourselves, including the pattern; a tradition handed down from her great-grandmother who we miss very much. This was our first Halloween without her, but we learned so much from her when she was alive that we’ll be able to take that with us for the rest of our lives.
