In 1872, an English poet named Christina Rossetti gazed outside her window at the whirling snow. She imagined a chilly winter’s night, when the wind howled over a humble stable where Jesus Christ was born. She thought of angels, shepherds, wise men, and farm animals all gathering to share the still and holy night. And she envisioned a person with no gold or blessings to give, who chose to give what they had: their heart. She put her quill to paper and began to write: "In the bleak midwinter..."
Acclaimed author-illustrator Tomie dePaola painted several images of Rossetti sitting down to write her beloved carol before his death in 2020. These paintings formed the basis for this book, which incorporates other images depicting the nativity by dePaola — both from his children's books and from his fine art — creating both a final picture book and a stunning retrospective of his work. This wintry picture book will be cherished all through the holiday season.
