Set in the early 1960s, this sensitive comedy-drama stars Whoopi Goldberg as a feisty housekeeper-nanny hired by a widowed ad jingle writer (Ray Liotta) to care for his 7-year-old daughter (Tina Majorino), who has been unable to speak since her mother's death. Goldberg uses her magical personality to help the young girl speak again and draw Liotta out of his sadness.
Goldberg gives one of her finest performances as the levelheaded Corrina; and little Majorino is heartbreakingly effective. But the film entirely bears the stamp of one person, and that's Nelson, who has a wonderfully witty eye and a sophisticated but sensitive approach to the crosscurrents of emotion at play in this story. -- Tom Keogh
