For A Mighty Girl's new giveaway, we're excited to present Hello, Star, a touching new picture book about a girl who discovers a passion for space thanks to her love for one glowing star!
One night, a little girl spots an extra bright spot in the night sky. "A very big star is dying," her mother tells her. "It will shine like that for a long time until it finally fades away." The girl is fascinated, but also sad to think of the star slowly dwindling, alone in the sky. "Hello, Star," she whispers. "I know you're scared, but you're not alone." As she grows up, she learns everything she can about stars, planets, and space. She goes to college and learns about neutron stars and black holes, all the time whispering to her now dimming star: “I’ll find a way to you.” She becomes an astronaut candidate, learning to work in zero gravity and doing repairs during a spacewalk. Finally, she travels to the moon and stretches out a hand to her patient friend, saying, "Hello, Star. I'm here.” Now content, the deep blue giant finally fades with a proud sigh and cracks into countless new stars, all young and bright and strong, as the now grown-girl looks on.
This luminous picture book celebrates how a single act of compassion can grow into a life full of meaning and wonder. The little girl's compassion for the star reminds us of our own connection to the universe – how the molecules that form a star, or a person, linger on long after we are gone. Author Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic uses her character's love of astronomy to relay intriguing facts about supernovas and space, while dreamy illustrations by artist Vashti Harrison are packed with fun details for young readers to discover – including homages to fictional role model Nyota Uhura from Star Trek and real-life mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani and astronaut Mae Jemison. This inspiring picture book pays tribute to the power of empathy to forge lifelong connections and how the gift of curiosity can help us aim for the stars!
Thanks to its publisher Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, three A Mighty Girl supporters will each receive a copy of the new picture book Hello, Star, recommended for ages 4 to 8 and an heirloom-quality 16-piece Constellation Building Block Set. Additionally, a second copy of Hello, Star will be donated to the school library of the winner’s choice.
