Pauline and her little brother John-John look out the window at the winter day and decide... to have a lemonade stand! Gathering their money, they buy supplies for lemonade and limeade and try to attract customers on their mostly empty street. Along the way, they learn lots of simple math concepts in a fun way, and in the end, at least they've made enough money for a couple of Popsicles.
This charming book teaches basic addition, subtraction, and other simple financial tasks, as well as providing an introduction to entrepreneurship to preschool children. Kids will giggle at the slightly misplaced idea of selling lemonade in winter, but it will teach them not to be discouraged if an attempt at entrepreneurship fails. It's a story of cooperation, creativity, and resilience that's sure to inspire a few budding business owners.
"Karas's illustrations, rendered with brush and walnut ink in sepia tones, capture the half-light of an overcast winter day as the children, bundled in warm clothes, tend their stand and count their earnings. A last page, called "Pauline Explains Money to John-John," shows both fronts and backs of different coins and explains their worth. This quirky tale is a boon for young entrepreneurs, who will enjoy looking at the humorous details in the pictures as much as working out the math after each sale." -- Mary Jean Smith, School Library Journal
