In Borneo, the habitat of the orangutan is rapidly disappearing, and orphaned orangutans are frequently rescued from black market sellers. Danish conservationist Lone Droscher Nielsen is working to save this beautiful, fascinating animals. At her Nyaru Menteng sanctuary, she is working to teach orphaned orangutans how to live in the wild -- in a way that allows them to share the remaining habitat.
Orangutan Island tells the story of Nielsen's efforts to rehabilitate and reintroduce a "class" of orangutans into the wild. As the orangutans begin to live with less and less human assistance, they face all the dangers that Borneo always had to offer -- as well as new ones caused by their unusual proximity to each other. The road will be hard, but if Nielsen's work succeeds, 30 orangutans who would have lived their lives in captivity will return to the wild.
