13-year-old Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) is an up-and-coming competitive surfer who's ready to fight her way to the top. But when a shark unexpectedly attacks her in the water, Bethany loses her arm and fights to survive the blood loss. The recovery is hard, as is the onslaught of media attention, but what hurts her the most is the idea that she may never be able to surf again.
Her first attempts to get back on the board don't go well, and for a while, Bethany gives up on her dreams of riding waves. But as she begins to rediscover her joy in the water, she also realizes that her story can help others. With a little ingenuity and a lot of practice, Bethany finally gets back to surfing... but shows the world that winning isn't the most important thing. Based on Hamilton's true story of survival, this is a powerful comeback story that celebrates what really matters.
