Thank U is the first single from Canadian singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette's 1998 album Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. In many ways this album was a response to struggles Morissette experienced after the sudden success of her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill brought huge industry attention and pressure. Morissette has spoken publicly about her experiences suffering from depression in the time between the albums, and about how she found peace with herself again after traveling to India prior to writing this album. In Thank U, Morissette sings about the ways in which she is trying to find her new center, and thanks her experiences -- both positive and negative -- for bringing her to her revelation.
Notes for Parents: Morissette's lyrics require some interpretation, and some of them (especially the chorus, which sings "Thank you India/thank you terror/thank you disillusionment") will require some context, so this song is most suitable for girls 13 and up. It will be resonate particularly strongly with girls who are seeking a sense of self-identity and peace. The music video was controversial because Morissette is nude throughout it, although her hair covers her breasts and her pelvic area is totally blurred; she walks the streets of a city, occasionally being gently touched or embraced by strangers as she goes. The nudity is not sexualized and the overall effect is uplifting, but parents may wish to view the video before deciding if it is suitable for their child.
