The Starkeeper

The world has been lonely and dark a long time, and a little girl, tired of waiting for things to change, wishes the dark would go away. And when she does, she discovers a fallen star! The star is "beautiful and warm and perfect," and she wishes she could keep it all to herself. But this star encourages kindness and needs to shine, so the longer it's hidden away, the more the glow from the star starts to fade. The girl worries — maybe she's not a very good starkeeper. How can she ensure the star keeps its light?

Then a chance gesture of kindness to another child seems to brighten the star, and the girl realizes that sharing makes it brighter still. Soon, she's doing simple good deed wherever she can — and soon this kindness leads to a chain of good works that light up the once-dreary town. With vibrant illustrations that slowly brighten as the girl helps bring light to others, this is a powerful metaphorical tale about how small kindnesses can make the whole world better.
