Eva lives in an Inuit village in northern Canada. In the winter, the tide goes out and leaves a vast space under the ice — and people from Eva's community search along the bottom of the seabed for mussels to eat, gathering the delicious treat until the tide comes back in. Eva usually helps her mother, but today, for the first time, she's going to go by herself!
Eva soon gathers a pan full of mussels. But then, her candle goes out, and the tide is drawing near. Eva will have to get herself home without her mother's help — but she knows that her mother has taught her well. And when she is finally safe at home, Eva proclaims to her mother, "That was my very last first time walking alone on the bottom of the sea." This beautiful picture book is both a celebration of a unique tradition and a reminder to kids of just how many "last first times" they have every year that they grow.
