Thirteen-year-old Jamie Bunn made a mistake at the end of the school year. A big one. And every kid in her middle school knows all about it. Now she has to spend her summer vacation volunteering at the local library — as punishment. What a waste of a summer! Or so she thinks.

But as Jamie gets to know the library — and its regular visitors — she gains a new appreciation for it. Director Beverly and her staff, Sonia and Lenny, offer patience and kindness to people that Jamie wouldn't think twice about, like Wally, who comes every Tuesday to bring a flower and borrow movies, or Black Hat Guy, a homeless young man who shows up every day at 4:00. She also begins to savor the responsibility that Beverly offers her as she proves herself.
