Irena Sendler

Irena Sendler was a Polish Catholic social worker who was head of the children's section of Zegota, an underground resistance organization in German-occupied Warsaw during WWII. Sendler successfully smuggled approximately 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto, saving them from almost certain death.
