When war comes to Sofiya's country, she and her mother and grandmother are forced to set off on a long journey to escape the violence and find safety. Sofiya doesn’t know whether she will ever see her friends or her beloved garden again, and nobody eles can give her the answers, either. So she takes a sunflower with her as a reminder of all that she is leaving behind.
The journey is difficult and long, and Sofiya finds herself in a strange country. Her mother says it's a safe place, but it doesn't feel like home. Fortunately, her homegrown keepsake has a surprise in store ― one that will help Sofiya put down her own roots and feel at home in a new place. This poignant picture book inspired by the experiences of Ukrainian refugees is a powerful way to talk to younger children about conflict, displacement, and what it means to bring home wherever you go.
