Long before crayons ruled the craft table, its ancestor, encaustic, showed the ancient world just how magnificent colored wax can be! Used by ancient portrait makers, encaustic is a centuries-old art making technique that uses melted colored beeswax to create glossy drawings. With this kid-safe kit by artists and art educators Shannon Ninburg and Bridget Daly, any child can learn about this lost art as he or she creates a one-of-a-kind masterpiece of their own.
The process is simple and fun, and everything you need to explore this fascinating technique is included in the irresistible can. Just draw a picture on the wooden frame using the oil pastels, lay beeswax on top, and melt the wax in a warm oven. After the wax has cooled, you can also draw on top of it, creating a lovely layered look. You can also include collage elements (like pictures from magazines) in the bottom layer. The possibilities are endless, and the results are beautiful and unique.
The can contains two wood frames, a box of oil pastels, colored beeswax, natural beeswax, a glue stick, plastic hangers, and instructions. There are enough materials to complete two projects. Please note: requires adult supervision to melt the wax in the oven.
