To the little girl sitting at the scratched-up, homemade table, wearing scruffy shoes and second-hand clothes, her family feels far from rich. And yet, both her mother and father insist that they are — richer than anyone they know.
At a family meeting, she tries to make her case: their family doesn't have enough money, so her parents should give up the outdoor jobs that they love and take jobs that would make the money she thinks they need. But as her parents guide her through attempts to calculate the value of the desert hills, the colors of blooming cactus, and the calls of eagles and great horned owls, the girl realizes what really matters.
