Lizzie and Minka are sisters, but they’re nothing alike: Minka is outgoing and cheerful, while Lizzie is shy and sensitive. When Minka comes home from the market declaring she's fallen in love with a boy named Emil that she met there — who gave her a delicious plum and promised he'd make all her dreams come true — Lizzie is skeptical; plums aren't in season, so where did he get it? But Lizzie can't go to the market herself to investigate; the noise and crowds of people overwhelm her.
After the next market day, though, when Emil feeds Minka another out-of-season fruit, Minka falls ill. Now Lizzie has to act. With the help of a neighboring farm boy, she discovers that Emil is a prince of the zduszes — the goblins — who's planning to ensnare her sister forever. To save Minka, Lizzie will have to draw on reserves of strength she never knew she had and follow her sister into a world of dreams, danger, and death. Rich worldbuilding inspired by Polish folklore combines with a tender sister story for an original and compelling fantasy-horror adventure in this gorgeous book.
