24-year-old factory worker Maud (Carey Mulligan) is leading a quiet life when she gets caught up by accident in a suffragette protest — and arrested. Her time in jail with the suffragettes makes her curious, and before long, she's sneaking to secret rallies to hear speakers like the indomitable Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep). But her association with the suffragettes has a cost: her husband kicks her out of their home and keeps her from their son, and then she's fired for her connection to the suffrage movement.
Far from dissuading her, however, these consequences convince her that the suffragettes are right: women must fight for their rights — violently, if necessary. But with radicalism comes danger; will Maud have to give her life for the cause of equality? This powerful drama, inspired by true events, captures the spirit and determination of women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain.
