To most people, Vera Drake is a devoted wife, loving mother, kind neighbor, and dedicated house cleaner — exactly what you'd expect for a working class woman living in post-war London. But Vera has a secret: she performs abortions, for free, for the desperate women who come to her for help. For Vera, it's just another act of compassion; wealthy women may be able to afford a psychiatrist who can grant access to a highly restricted legal abortion on therapeutic grounds, but the poor women Vera serves have no other options... and are least likely to be able to manage another mouth to feed.
But Vera's methods aren't completely safe, and she's not performing her procedures in a hospital. When one of her patients nearly dies, she's arrested and charged. None of Vera's employers will give her a character reference, and even her own son isn't sure he can forgive her. The judge even sentences her to more than the minimum sentence "as a deterrent to others." This powerful and nuanced film is a searing look at the realities of a world in which women's reproductive rights are curtailed — including who pays the price and who can afford to avoid it.
